Some Tips for Keeping and Caring for Cichlids

Jason Balchand - Monday, February 20, 2012

If you want an interesting and attractive freshwater aquarium, cichlids are popular and have many subspecies. Many beginner aquarium enthusiasts go with this type of tank for interesting looking fish that are generally resilient. A few tips can help you succeed at keeping a healthy and colourful aquarium.

Tank Condition

The right size of fish tank and the condition are both vital. You cannot simply set up an aquarium and toss a few pairs of cichlids in. The tank must contain properly oxygenated water supply to create an ideal ecosystem. Otherwise, fish are unlikely to survive.

It is wise to read articles or books, and watch videos that prepare new would-be aquarists for the hobby. It is also better to do this before buying your tank and accessories. Once you set up your tank, you cannot instantly put the fish in.

You need to ensure that the right levels of pH and other minerals are equally present in the water. Optimum levels need to be in place so it is important to measure the pH, ammonia levels, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, etc. You can purchase aquarium test kits to help you measure these essential elements and make the proper adjustments.

Fish Food

Good quality Cichlid pellets are important. Hikari Cichlid pellets are a high quality fish food. Hikari is a company with over a century of expertise in this area and they offer several cichlid pellets, including:

  • Hikari Cichlid Gold
  • Hikari Cichlid Gold Sinking Pellets
  • Hikari Cichlid Staple Pellets

Good fish food will help you get the result of healthy and vibrant looking fish.

Maintenance

A regular and proper maintenance is important. Monitoring the health of your fish and keeping the tank clean is highly necessary. You will find many aquarium accessories that will help you do this.

Other Cichlid Tips

  • It would be wise to quarantine new fish before introducing them to your tank in case of illness such as Ich.
  • Not all cichlids get along. Carefully monitor new tank additions to make sure everyone gets along. It would be wise to ensure your tank is big enough that fish can find hiding.

This is not an exhaustive list of the things you need to do in keeping a freshwater aquarium. Getting educated and prepared will help you maximise your success with your aquarium and minimise fish loss and unnecessary expenses.
