How To Guide: Converting parrots from seed to parrot pellets.
Parrots being fed seed only diets will quite often suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies. This is because seed diets, no matter how good the mix is, do not contain all the essential vitamins and minerals that parrots need, especially during breeding time. You will also find they will gorge themselves on one seed in particular, usually sunflower seed, which is not good for them. The solution to this is feeding them a diet consisting mainly of parrot pellets. Parrot pellets are a nutritionally complete balanced diet for birds. They come in a maintenance parrot pellet and a breeder parrot pellet. The other benefit of parrot pellets is there is no waste. With seed diets you get a lot of waste in the form of husks, with parrot pellets it is 100% edible, no husk therefore no waste.
Following are a few methods that can be used to get parrots to eat parrot pellets.
Mix a handful of parrot pellets and a handful of seed together in a container. Add enough hot water to make the mix sticky. Mould the mix into a rissole shape and press together. Place the freshly made rissole in the birds normal feeding container. The birds will initially pick through the rissole looking for seed. Repeat the process daily but slowly reduce the amount of seed and increase the portion of parrot pellets.
A blend of dry seed and parrot pellets can be used in a normal dish. This method is slower and acceptance varies between individual birds.
Removing seed and replacing it with parrot pellets is the least preferred method. In this instance the birds should have access to fruit and vegetables at all times so they have some form of nutrition whilst learning what parrot pellets are.
Birds that are hand tame can be offered parrot pellets smeared with fruit or peanut butter from your hand until they get used to the taste.
Ensure adequate clean water supply during the parrot pellet conversion process.
Birds will increase their water consumption when eating parrot pellets.
